religious itineraries

A pilgrimage is a journey made for devotion, or spiritual penance to a place considered sacred.
The Jubilee of 1300 determines the value of the pilgrimage to Rome. The Via Francigena, also called via Romea, was the road that from Rome, the holy city, brought the pilgrims through the Central and Western Europe.
Already the Lombards, in the seventh century, used this way (which then runs for a stretch along the ancient Via Cassia), to move down Italy, but over time it became clear its function of communication route from the center of Christianity, Rome, to Jerusalem.

The itineraries of the major pilgrimages (Jerusalem, Santiago de Compostela, Rome, Canterbury, S. Michele Arcangelo in Puglia, etc) are important for their sanctuaries and monasteries.

S. Croce in Gerusalemme
It is a famous destination of religious pilgrimages. It is also called Helenian or Sessorian as it rises on the site of the Sessorian Palace, private residence of Helena, Constantine’ s mother. There are two theories about its name; the first one refers to the relics of Christ’s cross which Helena brought from Jerusalem, now kept in the iron cross on the travertine façade. The second one refers to the legend according to which the basilica was commissioned by Constantine to celebrate the victories gained over Maxentius, in the name of the cross that appeared to him in a vision and that he wanted on the vessels. Actually it was built, according to the historical reconstruction, around the half of the fourth century b.C. by the descendants of the Emperor. It was the seat of a Council in 433. It was restored for the first time under the pontificate of Lucius II, between 1144 and 1145, but underwent a considerable transformation, after which it lost its Romanesque features, in 1743 by commission of Benedict XIV.
Sant'Andrea della Valle
Sant'Andrea della Valle was designed and built by Pier Paolo Olivieri, Francesco Grimaldi, and Carlo Maderno between 1590 and 1650. The nearby “Palazzo Valle” gave the name of the church. The baroque facade was added between 1655 and 1663 by Carlo Rainaldi.

Santa Maria del Popolo
Santa Maria del Popolo is built on the site where Nero died and was buried. The church was built under Pope Sixtus IV. In the kiosk Augustinian stayed Martin Luther during his youthful years spent in Italy. The church contains masterpieces by Caravaggio and Bernini.

Santa Maria sopra Minerva
Basically there is only a great Gothic church in Rome. The facade is of the early Renaissance. The Dominicans built the church in 1280 with Gothic foreign workers from Florence. In the interior richly decorated there is the tomb of Saint Catherine of Siena and of the Beato Angelico. Among the many works of Bernini and other artists, include the Christ Judge by Melozzo from Forlì and the Risen Christ by Michelangelo, which nudity is covered with a metallic drape for centuries.
In the square before there is the famous Chick of Minerva. The adjoining convent of the Dominicans was established in 1628 by the Court of the Inquisition. There was put on trial, in 1633, Galileo Galilei.
However, even the back of the famous Trinità dei Monti is considered a late example of this style, built perhaps by French workers at the beginning of the sixteenth.

Santa Maria in Trastevere
The basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere dates in its present form, to the twelfth century. There are important mosaics of the twelfth century in the apse.

Santa Maria in Cosmedin
Santa Maria in Cosmedin is located between the Circus Maximus and the Tiber. The Romanesque Basilica was built in the sixth Century and enlarged in the VIII Century with three naves.
The tower was built in the twelfth century. The interior of the church contains eighteen ancient columns, mosaics and a Gothic canopy above the altar.
The church is also known for the Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verità), which is on a wall of entry  This is probably an ancient manhole cover with the face of a God of a river. The hole to raise the manhole, the mouth, is used as a lie detector because the legend tells that the mouth cuts the hands of the liar.

Santa Prassede all'Esquilino
Santa Prassede, not far from Santa Maria Maggiore, was built in 822 and contains splendid mosaics of the ninth Century.
Particularly interesting is the Chapel of San Zeno in the right aisle, also known as the Garden of Paradise. In the church you can see a column which, according to tradition, is the one utilized in the flogging of Christ and the relics of 2.000 martyrs who were brought here from the catacombs.

Santa Maria degli Angeli
e dei Martiri
Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri was completed by Michelangelo in the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian in Piazza della Repubblica. The church was then adapted to the baroque style. The transept is longer than the aisle. It contains a large group of altarpieces of the XVII-XVIII century, from St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.
