OSTIA (PINEWOOD OF CASTEL FUSANO)

The story of Castel Fusano is very ancient. It was the game reserve of the Chigi family.
The reserve of pine forest of Castel Fusano is crossed by the Via Severiana. The road was built by Septimius Severus to connect Ostia, Lavinio, Anzio and Terracina. The road soon becomes a convenient access to the many villas that the noble Romans built as summer residences near the city of Rome. The first one to build was the orator Ortensio, a magistrate of a Roman fleet during the wars in Macedonia. The villa, long considered of Pliny the Younger and which name still retains, is built on an embankment, surrounded by magnificent oaks.

In the years there were several changes of ownership of all or parts of the estate. In 1888 the zone, given in rent to King Umberto I, was used only for hunting and the vegetation, without further action, could resume its natural course.
In 1932 Francesco Chigi sell the estate, reserving for him the castle and a certain amount of surrounding land.

Castel Fusano becomes in 13rd April 1933, a large park in Rome, daily destination of thousands of people. In July 2000, a disastrous fire has affected its 300 hectares of pine forest monumental secular, consisting of pine sparse large and a dense undergrowth of plants of the Mediterranean evergreen bush. Unfortunately, the damage was enormous; more than 280 hectares have been destroyed.
