| Fiumicino is a central-Italian town in the province of Rome. There is located the international Airport “Leonardo da Vinci”.
Fiumicino is a large fishing town on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast and has long been known for its great seafood restaurants. It also is a weekend getaway for the people of Rome, especially in the summer.
There is a good beach with black sand, due to its high iron content. The name means little river.
The port of Fiumicino is a major stopover for distant water fleets which gave considerable importance to the fish market of the town of Lazio.
In the “Isola Sacra” there are excavation of an ancient Roman necropolis “Portus” with some very well-preserved mosaics and paintings mosaic decorations. In this area you can also visit the ruins of the Basilica of St. Ippolito.
Along the way Portuense you can visit what remains of Castle Harbor. Before this was the archaeological area of the Port of Trajan.
