The monument is dedicated to the memory of the first Italian King Vittorio Emanuele of Savoia.
This neo-classic structure in white marble was carried out by Giuseppe Sacconi between 1885 and 1911. Some have critically compared it to a “type-writer”.
The Vittoriano as the monument is better known, is dominated by an imposing statue of the mounted sovereign executed by Enrico Chiaradia, and by two quadrilles – Liberty and Unity placed on the imposing propylaea. The edifice houses an altar of 1921 to the Fatherland- Altare della Patria and the Tomb to the Unknown Soldier.
