A central feature of the square is the Sallustian obelisk. The famous baroque stairs known as the Spanish Steps with their 137 steps in all which descend gradually and gracefully to the square below, were built between 1723 and 1726 by the architect De Sanctis.
Below is to be found the splendid XVII century fountain Barcaccia in the shape of a boat. It is attributed to Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo.
