Baroque in style, the festive agon square stands on the ancient 1st century Circus of Domitian and still retains its original ecliptic shape. Bernini’s famous Fountain of the Four Rivers, 1648 –1651, stands at the centre of the square.
The fountain features an obelisk erected on a rocky base on which pose the four statues representing the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile and the Rio of Plata. In front of the fountain rises the Church of St. Agnus in Agon, rebuilt in the sixteen hundreds – a fine example of Borromini’s mastery.
Standing at the extreme ends of Piazza Navona, are two fountains – the Moro Fountain, the basin of which is the work of Bernini and which is ornamented with 15th century style statues. The other is the Fountain of Neptune.
