Catacombs of San Callisto

The catacombs arose in mid-second century and are part of a cemetery complex which occupies an area of 15 hectares of land, with a network of tunnels nearly 20 km long spread over several floors to reach a depth over 20 meters.
They take their name from deacon S. Callisto that early in the third century was assigned by Pope Zephyrinus to the administration of this place of burial that was decreed cemetery official in Rome.

Before going into underground burrows, you can see two small basilicas with three apses, likely place of burial of the young martyr of the Eucharist San Tarcisio.
